This session is the second in a series of four modules. This session takes a unique approach to discuss ethics in the accounting profession. It starts with the most critical, and often the most neglected, element of moral decision making, THE INDIVIDUAL. During the session, the participant gets the opportunity to take an assessment to learn about his/her own moral intelligence. The module then provides a review of the ethical decision making process and how the brain morally matures. Collectively, the assessment and review recalibrate the participant’s moral compass. To guide ethical decision making for the future we then review the current state of ethics in Corporate America and discuss the most common myths associated with ethical decision-making. Practice is important. Throughout this module the participant will apply his/her knowledge to four different general business and accounting specific case studies. During the last part of the session, we synthesize the participant’s self-reflection, the most recent ethics in American data and their experience with the session’s case studies with the AICPA Code of Conduct. During this synthesis activity, the participant will identify the direct impact she/he has to help uphold and support the profession’s ethical obligation to him/herself, to each other, and to the public. This course is designed to help the participant build his/her moral capacity and intelligence. The experiential-based activities provide a safe opportunity for learning which builds stronger ethical decision makers. All of these elements can be tied to the Public Accountancy profession as they relate to being objective, independent, honest, serving the public’s interest, integrity, and due care.
